John Haskell Homestead
Haskell Canyon, Saugus

The Haskell Ranch in Haskell Canyon, northwest of Bouquet Canyon, was settled about 1890 by John C. Haskell, a pioneer of 1849. Haskell built the cattle ranch up to over 800 acres. Haskell Canyon was also home to hog ranching by the Agajanian family.

According to Haskell family tradition, just as a couple of drought years almost bankrupted John Haskell, he discovered a rich placer deposit practically at his kitchen door. The deposit was so rich, the story goes, that Haskell and a hired man placered out $25,000 worth of gold dust in one year. The placer beds continued to produce for many years and were worked by (?) Gillette in 1930.
