Ralph Williams Pharmacy (Swall Building) in Snow

Ralph Williams' Pharmacy building at the southwest corner of Market and Spruce streets (now Market and Main streets) in the snow.

This 8x10 matte print (from a 4x5-inch negative) is undated, but it's probably 1949. If we're right, it's the week of January 10, 1949. It started snowing around noon that day (a Monday), and didn't let up for several days. Newhall reportedly got "two inches at the foot of the Newhall grade to six inches at the summit."

The vehicles look right for 1949; there was a hotel known simply as the Newhall Hotel, and Williams' pharmacy (which he owned at the time) bore the Rexall brand name in 1949.

The brick building was erected in the 1910s by grocer and innkeeper Albert C. Swall, whose name still appears at the top ("A.C. Swall").
