Unused souvenir postcard showing the "Olive mill at Camulos — old home of Ramona." Hand-colored, printed in Germany.

The publisher, M. Rieder of Los Angeles, was in business from 1901-1915, and the domestic postcard rate was 1 cent throughout that time, so we can't reliably narrow the date any further.

The Del Valle family, who owned Rancho Camulos until 1924, capitalized on the popularity of Indian rights activist Helen Hunt Jackson's 1884 novel, "Ramona," to attract tourists and market their "Home of Ramona" branded citrus products.

According to the 1934 New Deal-era HABS report (Historic American Buildings Survey) for Camulos, Jackson modeled the olive mill in her novel after this olive mill:

Mrs. Jackson has faithfully described the family chapel, the bells, the old brick winery, the spring and washing-place, the grape arbor, the olive mill, and other interesting features which remain.

Rancho Camulos Museum is located 10 miles west of Valencia on scenic Highway 126. Visit RanchoCamulos.org.
