Ruben Luis Garcia
General Motors, HASA Chemicals, American Legion Post 507
Ruben Luis Garcia passed away at his home in the Crescent Valley Mobile Home community in Newhall on April 11, 2021.
Ruben was born in Los Angeles to Trinidad and Lupe Garcia. He was one of three children. He had an older sister Martha and a younger brother Larry.
Ruben came to the SCV in 1959, following his soon-to-be bride Lydia Herron. They were married shortly after.
In 1960 they had their first child, a daughter, Nadine Garcia of Newhall. Not long after the birth of Nadine, they had their second child, Deborah Ann Ramirez of Palmdale. Ruben and Lydia were together for 16 years.
Shortly after the birth of Nadine, Ruben went to work for General Motors in Van Nuys where he started working on the line and worked his way up to foreman. He was with General Motors for more than 45 years and then he retired. Bored with retirement, he went back to work, this time for Homeland Security at HASA Chemicals in Newhall. He was with them for several years before he permanently retired.
Ruben continued to live in and love his mobile home community. He looked forward chatting with his neighbors and friends daily. Ruben loved to ride his Harley Davidson alongside his daughter Nadine. He also loved horses and horseback riding with his daughter Deborah. He loved horses and riding so much that he entered the SCV Fourth of July Parade on two occasions in the late 1960s and early '70s as a solo rider.
In his younger years, Ruben and his wife Lydia were often seen walking hand-in-hand to the American Theater in Newhall. When it became American Legion Post 507, Ruben became an auxiliary member. He had been a member for more than 60 years.
Ruben also had a dog, Lola, that he loved very much. He also enjoyed camping and boating.
Ruben is survived by his daughter Nadine Garcia and daughter Deborah and her husband Gilbert and his two grandchildren, Brandy and little Gilbert, as well as one great-grandchild, Johnathon. And of course, his dog, Lola.
The family will have a public service to be announced at a later date.
