Old Orchard School's sixth grade had a living lesson in ecology, conservation and physical fitness Friday. The class, in high spirits and lunch in hand, walked from Old Orchard School to William S. Hart Park.
Lunch break was welcome after the mile-and-a-half jaunt. After replenishment, the class teachers, Tom Masters, Dayle Shalhoub, Bob Parman and Doug Rogers, along with the class, commenced to clean up and reconstruct the picnic sites on back acreage of Hart Park.
Rakes and hoes in hand, they toiled by removing rubbish, rebuilding fire sites and water stations and readied the evergreens for irrigation. It was a tough job, but the sixth graders showed enthusiasm and did the job well.
When the time came to ready themselves for the trip back to school, they could look upon the picnic sites proudly. There were a lot of tired feet when they finally arrived at Old Orchard School and their lesson in conservation well learned.
