Downtown Newhall's A&W Root Beer stand becomes an all-weather establishment with the addition of a canopy in June 1961.

Vaughn and Lorraine Elmore opened downtown Newhall's A&W Root Beer stand at 24030 San Fernando Road (now called Newhall Avenue), just south of 2nd Street, on April 20, 1960. They added a new canopy for drive-up traffic on the 2nd Street side of the building in June 1961. The Elmores' son, Loren, and daughter, Sheila, occasionally worked as car hops.

By the end of the 1960s, William Kohlmeier opened Bar-B-Q Bill's Wrangler restaurant next door at 24014 San Fernando Road, on the Arch Street side. Kohlmeier was a board member of the Newhall-Saugus-Valencia Chamber of Commerce and the 1968 SCV Man of the Year (before it was called that).
