Newhall Fourth of July Parade, 1946. That looks like Montie Montana riding by Clymore Ford on Spruce Street (later Main) between Market Street (to the left) and Sixth Street (to the right), but we can't be sure. At the time, Montie was hugely popular with kids (he brought his trick roping exhibitions to schools), and as the advertising icon of Weber's Bread. In 1946 he was living in Northridge on a ranch that became Devonshire Downs; it would be another few decades before he moved to a ranch in Agua Dulce.

Photo courtesy of Patricia Westcott Kelly, originally of Mentryville (1933-1941), then of Newhall. She obtained the photo from her sister-in-law Annette (Kelly) Birkbigler and Mary Louise Williams. Patricia writes: "The Kellys lived in the back adobe house on Melody Ranch, as their dad was a guard, about the Korean War time."
